Banshu-ori textiles
It’s packed with a tremendous amount of history!
Banshu-ori, a traditional industry of which Nishiwaki is proud, is a yarn-dyed cotton fabric in which the threads are dyed first and then woven into cloth.
Although it continues to hold the top share of the domestic market today, it was not until after World War II that it experienced a period of unprecedented economic boom.
It was said that once the loom made a “clang” sound, 10,000 yen was earned.
During the period of rapid economic growth ushered in by the “Gachaman Boom, ” Nishiwaki saw a massitve influx of workers from all over western Japan.
Taking a trip around Nishiwaki this time is Ms. Fuka Nakagaki, 2023 Flower Princess.
Trace the trajectory of Japan’s turbulent period of rapid economic growth as you walk through the town of Nishiwaki.
